Lamb’s House dates back to Leith’s golden age
A rare opportunity has arisen to buy a slice of Scotland’s rich trading history, writes JULENA DRUMI
One of Scotland’s oldest homes, a category A listed building dating back to 1610, is on the market for offers over £3.75 million. Lamb’s House, within the Leith Conservation Area and close to The Shore, has its own walled garden, a Renaissance-inspired pavilion, and is steeped in centuries of maritime and mercantile heritage.
Built during Leith’s golden age as an independent and fortified port town, the four-storey residence is a rare survivor from Scotland’s early modern period.
In recent years it has been meticulously restored to the highest conservation standards and has ten bedrooms, with further potential in the adjacent offices.
The architectural detail throughout is exceptional: crow-stepped gables, massive Baltic pine beams, leaded windows, and expansive 17th-century fireplaces all speak to its historical pedigree.

Modern enhancements have been sensitively introduced, allowing the past to shine while meeting the demands of contemporary living.
A particular jewel within the property is the walled garden, reimagined in 2010 in the spirit of a Renaissance parterre.
Enclosed by a high stone wall and designed around mirrored quatrefoil beds and hornbeam columns, the garden invites quiet reflection amid fragrant roses, silvery foliage and classical detailing. It binds together the old and new with grace and serenity, offering a private oasis at the heart of the city.

Ben Fox, residential director at Savills Edinburgh, said: “Lamb’s House is not merely a remarkable home – it is an enduring symbol of Scotland’s architectural brilliance and cultural continuity.
“Every stone, beam and bloom speaks to the spirit of Leith. To offer this property to the market is to invite someone to become the next steward of a truly exceptional chapter in Scotland’ history.”
