United Airlines faces tech outage at major U.S. hubs, delaying flights

United Airlines said that it was holding flights at their origin due to a “technology issue.” The computer outage is expected to affect flights this evening, and possibly into tomorrow.

The airline also requested that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for flights across affected airports. Among them are the airline’s various hubs at New Jersey’s Newark, Chicago’s O’Hare, and Houston International Airports, among others.

Similar technical outages have affected other U.S. airlines in recent months. Two weeks ago, Alaska Airlines  (ALK)  experienced an IT outage which resulted in a temporary grounding of flights. Other U.S. airlines, including Delta  (DAL)  and Southwest  (LUV) , have experienced other highly-publicized technical outages in recent years.

This story is breaking news and will be updated as information becomes available.
