McIntosh hired to oversee Reach Scotland titles – Daily Business

Neil McIntosh will edit the Daily Record

Former Scotsman editor Neil McIntosh has been appointed editor-in-chief of Reach Scotland, publisher of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail.

Mr McIntosh, who takes up the role later this month, will oversee all of the Scottish brands, including EdinburghLive and GlasgowLive. He will also edit the Daily Record.

He spent just over three years at The Scotsman, leaving last August after he was asked to make a quarter of the editorial staff redundant. He launched a daily newsletter and website, The Early Line, highlighting the morning headlines.

His other previous roles include managing editor of BBC Online, deputy editor (Europe) at The Wall Street Journal and head of editorial development at guardian.co.uk.

On his new role, he said it was “an exciting time for the company, and an important point in the digital transformation of the company’s famous Scottish titles.”

He succeeds David Dick, who is moving to a new role to lead the publisher’s national newspaper print strategy. After seven years heading the Glasgow-based titles he will take over as head of print (nationals) and will also be developing a podcast. His role will be to oversee the print production operation at the Daily Mirror, and the Express and Star titles.

David Higgerson, Reach’s chief content officer, said: “Neil brings a strong blend of editorial depth, digital insight, and true understanding of the Scottish audience, as well as strong experience I’m very glad to welcome him to the team and have no doubt that he’ll be well placed to continue to grow our distinctive brands and our loyal audiences in Scotland.”

It was also announced today that Gary Rogers will be joining the Editorial Senior Leadership Team at Reach, in the newly created role of director of newsroom transformation. A former BBC leader and independent newsroom consultant, he will focus on developing the company’s editorial AI strategy and supporting long-term newsroom innovation.

Half-year figures announced by Reach last month show show group revenue declined 3.4% to £256m in the first half.

Print revenue came in 4.8% lower at £194.1m (HY24: £204.0m), while digital revenue continued to grow to £61.1m (HY24: £60.0m), up 1.8%.
