75-year-old furniture chain closing more stores, no bankrutpcy

  • The chain has begun going-out-of-business sales in some stores.
  • Others are closing with no official announcement being made.
  • Some of the chain’s locations are having inventory blowout sales, but may not be closing.

Sometimes a retailer dies in one big shutdown. In other cases, the chain closes stores in waves as the chain fights for survival.

While that’s happening, the retailer always puts on a brave face and acts like it’s making changes designed to save the whole company, which is usually what the company’s intention is. The problem is that once this chain reaction starts, it’s often hard to stop it.

American Signature Furniture, which also uses the Value City Furniture brand, has been quietly closing stores. In October, the chain confirmed that it would shut down four stars in Tennessee and exit that market.

At the time, the company tried to position the move as a strategic decision.

“This is a strategic business decision focused on our long-term growth priorities,” said ASF COO Pat Sanderson.

The company offered further color on the decision.

“ASF’s exit from the Nashville market is part of the company’s ongoing effort to optimize its store portfolio and strengthen operations in markets where it continues to see the greatest opportunity for growth. ASF remains committed to delivering exceptional style, value, and service to customers across its national footprint,” it shared in a press release.

That could all be true, but just a few weeks later, the company is closing more locations.

Value CIty Furniture, an ASF brand, has also confirmed that it will be closing a number of stores in Michigan.

“Employees of Value City Furniture confirm the stores in Novi, Ann Arbor and Lansing are closing their doors. A salespersons in Novi, who spoke to WHMI News, would only say that location remains open until everything inside is sold,” the local news site reported.

Employees in Ann Arbor and Lansing confirmed they were liquidating their locations as well. A worker in Flint said that store is not on the chopping block, for now, according to WHMI.

No timeline was given for the store closures, and Value City Furniture’s parent company, American Signature Furniture, has yet to make a public announcement.

In addition to these closures, when you visit the chain’s website, which is geotargetted, from Florida, you are greeted with a “total inventory blowout” sale on the website.

That does not mean those stores are closing, although a customer service rep through the company’s online chat did say that all items in the store were being sold. It’s unclear whether that’s specifically the Miami location or if it applies to others in Florida.

The company does not list corporate contact info, and efforts to reach the chain through its posted phone number were not successful.

Furniture Today also reached out to the company for comment and additional details, but did not receive an answer.

This is a developing story and will be updated if new developments occur.
