One of the co-founders of Scottish brewery and pubs chain BrewDog has stunned the workforce by announcing he has left the company “for personal reasons”.
In an email to staff this morning, Martin Dickie, who set up the Ellon-based beverage firm with James Watt in 2007, confirmed he would be leaving the company.
Mr Dickie, 43, explained: “This business has been my life for the last 18 years and I have enjoyed (almost) every minute.
“I have been inspired by and loved working with and learning from so many interesting people who have worked in our business over the years from all over the world.”
One worker for the company told The National that Mr Dickie’s announcement came “out of the blue”.
Earlier this year he announced plans to invest £20m in a new medical cannabis company Waterside Pharmaceuticals.
A licence was granted by the Home Office last year to cultivate medical cannabis, with the firm describing its set-up as a tech-led vertical farm, with controlled environments and sustainable operations.
His departure from BrewDog comes after its signature beer, Punk IPA has been withdrawn from almost 2,000 pubs since 2022.
BrewDog has also been making heavy losses and is expected to make another pre-tax loss this year.
James Watt stepped aside in a management shake-up that saw James Arrow take over as CEO. He was quickly replaced by James Taylor who is now attempting to get the company’s financials back on track.
